  • S-A1 Pistol

The Steyr S-A1 striker-fired pistol is a sub-compact, semi-automatic, double-action handgun available as the S9-A1 chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum or the S40-A1 chambered in .40 Smith & Wesson. The smallest of Steyr’s pistol line, the S-A1 has a 3.6” (92mm) barrel and the same short overall length as the C-A1 but features a short grip for ultra-concealment.

As with each model in the Steyr A1 line of products, the pistol features a low bore-axis which minimizes recoil and improves control while the ergonomic grip offers optimal control for a variety of hand sizes. The lower frame of the gun offers a standard slide-lock thumb tab, right-handed magazine ejection button and pivoting break-down lever. A key-operated manual safety feature is located next to the break-down lever and 2 keys are provided with each pistol. An integrated Picatinny rail allows for simple mounting of a laser or light and slide-racking grooves on the back of the slide allow for a firm grip when manually operating the action.

Quality Review by Paul
I have the S40-A1. The price is right, the feel is good and the quality is awesome. A simple 3 piece brake down. Easy to clean and put back together. If you are looking for a holster for concealment , try Sneeky Pete's, and get the glock 19 holster. looks like a cell phone carrier. (Posted on 7/3/2018)
Amazing quality Review by WaltherSteyrlover
Owned my S-40A1 for over 5 years and have never had a problem. The ergonomic design makes it a pleasure to shoot any size .40 caliber round. It's not my EDC because of its thickness, but in winter with a jacket, it's works fine for carry. (Posted on 12/1/2017)
What more can be said. Review by NJCOP
I have numerous handguns and when it comes to what I want to shoot I always grab one of my Steyrs. One thing I know about my S9-A1, I don't shoot any CCW faster or more accurately. Not saying that I don't have more accurate pistols but when it comes to getting on target and putting rounds where they might be needed I have 100% confidence in this pistol and the M40-A1 that shoots more like a 9 than a 40. Best Striker out of the Box Review by Groundhog34
This is the most accurate and smoothest 9mm striker I have ever fired out of the box. The trapezoid sights were fine if one gets used to them. Since I have several other handguns with Truglo sights I replaced them making the sights not really an issue for me. The only real issue is the 10 round magazine. This pistol is ergonomically perfect for me. 500 plus rounds without any misfeeds. the trigger is the best I have felt on a striker fired gun. An underappreciated gem. (Posted on 5/8/2017)

My EDC of choice Review by Miles
My S40A is my every day carry. It has never failed to go bang when I pulled the trigger. In some ways I wish it were a little thinner so it would conceal a bit better, but as thin as I am it still conceals good. In short I love this pistol. (Posted on 3/3/2017)
My Only Carry Pistol Review by Geoff
You need to advertise more Steyr. These are absolutely great pistols. I've not has a single issue with the over 1,000 rounds I've put through my S9. Hands down the best striker pistol on the market for under $500. Just need to make magazines without that goofy plug. (Posted on 2/4/2017)
S40-A1 Review by jimmy
I have owned the S40-A1 for a couple of years now. What a great pistol.I have put 5000 rounds through it with no issues. It's the softest shooting 40 s&w firearm I own.I just wish more dealers here in Northeast Ohio would carry them in stock. (Posted on 12/5/2016)
Quality Review by Paul
I previously had a 9mm but I wanted to try a 40 Cal. as I have large hands and I was able to purchase the S40A1 on sale a couple of weeks ago. I started using 180 gr. FMJ then went to 165 gr. JHP both of which produced serious recoil with fps of only 1035 or less. But then I tried a Liberty 40 Cal. 60gr., and an average of 1846 FPS for 5 rounds and what was amazing was the recoil was less than what I had experienced with my 9mm with a 125 Cal. JHP and larger.

I can't say enough about the S40A1's flawless action, splendid trigger pull, and accuracy especially with the reduced recoil out to 25 yard, and response time back on target was excellent I have been singing the praises of this weapon to anyone who will listen. Two words I would use to describe it are : FLAWLESS or EXCELLENT. (Posted on 9/27/2016)
The Perfect Sub-Compact Review by Parnell
Everything about my S9-A1 is great! Minimal recoil, eats whatever you feed it, fantastic trigger and the trapezoidal sights are easy to acquire. My only gripe is build 15 round mags! That's the only feature that keeps the S9 from completely outclassing the Glock 19 and 26. (Posted on 8/16/2016)
Great pistol - need full capacity mags Review by flyandscuba
This is a very comfortable and accurate CCW in 9mm. It is superior in every way to other polymer striker fired handguns -- except in magazine capacity. A "full capacity" (12 or 13 rd) magazine should be offered for the non-communist states in the USA market. Limiting the S9-A1 magazine to 10 rounds may ease distribution to the restricted states, but the fix to make a full capacity magazine would not be a difficult nor expensive option.

I've had to resort to altering the feed lips on an S40-A1 magazine to "make my own" flush mount full capacity magazines. Not the ideal solution, but it does work. (Posted on 8/13/2016)
Amazing firearm! Review by Tim
If you like the other austrian company that makes handguns too you will absolutely love this firearm. Hands down the best stock trigger I have experienced on a stock handgun. Do yourself a favor and check it out. (Posted on 5/5/2016)

Great CCCW Review by ALEC R
This is one great CCW handgun. Had it for about 5 months now and have put various ammo manufacturer at various grains and it has been fantastic. I have put over 1500 rounds thru it and runs flawless. I have finally found a holster for it at mdj holster. I like the trapezoidal sights, but will be changing it to truglo tfx pro soon. I purchased 2 extra 17 round mags. I need to find more aftermarket accesories for it. Otherwise, I highly recommend it. (Posted on 3/26/2016)
Thank you!!! Review by Ben
I own a S9-A1 and absolutely love it!! The ergonomics, accuracy, and recoil cannot be touched by other firearms out there. This is my EDC that I carry with confidence.
Steyr has excellent customer service! The staff is always ready to help out and never leave you unsatisfied.
You cannot go wrong investing in a Steyr firearm!!! (Posted on 3/16/2016)
Great pistol Review by SRW
As good or better than any striker fired polymer handgun I have fired. Not what I would call a sub-compact, comparable to mid sized Glocks. Ergonomics are excellent. I have fairly large hands while my wife's hands are very small yet I fits well for each. Very easy to control recoil. Approximately 1000 rounds fired and I only recall one malfunction that could be blamed on the gun, a failure to extract. All rounds fired have been reloads so it could have been my ammo. 115 and 124 grain ball and a few JHP bullets, it isn't picky. The Trapezoid sights take some practice if your used to three dots. I like them, fast and precise. Still debating on getting aftermarket tritium three dot.
The trigger is excellent for a striker fired gun. I like the Ghost triggers in my Glocks, the Steyr is as good or better out of the box.
Reset is short but not as easy to feel as the Glock, takes a few hundred rounds to get the hang of it.
I also have the M40-A1, it is equally good. If you are looking for a striker fired gun take a look at the Steyrs, pull the trigger, check out the sights and grip, it may be just what you want.
While no handgun is perfect for everyone, these are top quality guns in every way. (Posted on 3/11/2016)
Great look and feel Review by Jan
I own both S9 and M9 models. The most ergonomic handguns I've ever held. Great trigger and very short reset. For concealed carry I'd recommend the M model or C model because it is only 1/3 inch longer than the S model. Handle on this S model is a bit too short IMO. (Posted on 3/10/2016)
buying a great piece of art no more glock. Review by hammer
the best glock on the market (Posted on 3/5/2016)
Impressive Review by Steve T
Ordered the s9-a1 from budsgunshop. Soon as I got it I ran 300rds of Winchester white box 115gr through it with no malfunctions. The trigger is as good as the claim and the sights are easy to use for me. My only gripe would be the gap between the slide and frame, but overall I'm impressed. At this price point you can't go wrong, the are what glock pistols should cost. Plus l, I shoot the s9 so much better than a glock 26. I highly recommend this over a baby glock due to ergonomics and trigger. Only for stars because it's still new with only 300 RDS in to it. But as of now I trust it with my life. (Posted on 3/4/2016)
Awesome Carry Review by jwmax
I've had my S40-A1 for everyday carry for the past 18 months. It's home in a Kramer IWB holster. Comfort is key and I have finally found a pistol that is so comfortable to carry it almost disappears. The low bore completely tames the .40 caliber. The ergonomics and handling are absolutley perfect. I used to carry a Glock 23 and this has replaced for daily carry. Didn't think I would find anything more comfortable or accurate, but the S40 has done it. Great pistol...I also own a M40. Steyr has done an awesome job with these pistols. I highly recommend them. Amazing Pistols... Review by R. Reed
I compete with Steyr pistols, I have multiple Steyrs in different calibers and frame sizes, and they are truly amazing. The low bore axis and large beaver tail equal an unparalleled reduction in felt recoil and muzzle rise. The triggers are short, light and smooth; by far the best factory triggers I have ever encountered. I am proud to represent such a wonderful product! (Posted on 2/17/2016)
One of the best kept secrets for CCW Review by Ben C.
Some folks refer to Steyr as an underdog or Glock killer. That may be the case.
This guy is an ergonomic masterpiece with an extremely crisp trigger pul along with a short reste.
Straight out of the box it performs like a champ!
You will be amazed on how deadly accurate it is!!
First three shots were tight about the diameter of an inch.
A superior weapon that needs to get more exposure.
You will not go wrong owning one!!!! (Posted on 2/14/2016)
Easy shooting 40 Review by thecros
I got my S40 the other day (feels awesome in the hand) and just went to the range. 100 rounds later and I had no FTF or FTE's. Decent groupings, and a real pleasure to put on target (still getting used to the trap sights but I like 'em). I think about 2 times, when I seated the new mag, the slide went forward (could have had my thumb on the slide catch) but it stripped a round and went into full battery both times. It shoots like a typical 9 recoil wise. My new favorite gun. (Posted on 2/11/2016)
An excellent carry pistol Review by Genetically Swiss
I absolutely love my Steyr S9-A1. It has cycled all the ammo I have ever put through it, ball and hollowpoint. Accurate, reliable and robust. I am very particular about ergonomics and Steyr is supieor. I have owned all the competition (Glock, SIG, HK, Walther, Beretta XDM, et al) and ended up with Steyr. If I could request one change from Steyr regards this pistol, it would be for them to manufacture full capacity 9mm magazines for those of us in free states, as opposed to only the 10 round magazines. S40-A1 Review by Jimmy
I've owned my S40 for 2yrs now.It is one of favorite firearms the fit finish and feel of these guns are awesome. The trap sights are great.Plus it's a soft shooter for being a .40SW.I just wish more dealers in Ohio would carry them in stock.I sold my Glocks after owning a Steyr. (Posted on 1/2/2016)

I've carried my s40a1 for 2 years now. It's a shame these pistols don't get that much attention. Very nice shooting pistols I've put a 1000 rounds through it and has ran flawless.I can't say enough about Steyr quality.I wish more gun shops would carry them in stock here in Ohio. An Excellent Pistol Review by Travis
I would rate this pistol 5 stars, but the magazines are plugged to 10 rounds for a 9mm. Why? This pistol could easily fit 12 or more rounds in the magazine so there is no reason for the 9mm to have the same capacity as the 40S&W. (Posted on 11/30/2015)
Awesome Gun Review by Greg
Just love this gun. Purchased a little over 2 months ago. Shot over 500 rounds without any issues whatsoever. Minimun felt recoil. Sites are dead on and most important of all, my wife loves it. Will have to get another, she can't have mine. (Posted on 11/25/2015)
