  • Steyr Pro Hunter

The Steyr Mannlicher Pro Hunter offers a modern compliment to other traditional platforms. A durable synthetic stock resists weather and rough use and features removable spacers in the butt of the stock to adjust length of pull.

The Pro Hunter’s barrel is available in a 23.6” or 20” barrel Stainless Steel version or Mountain version with 20” barrel. The rifle is chambered in a choice of 7mm-08 Remington, .308 Winchester, .270 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, .300 Winchester Magnum (available only in a 25.6” barrel variant).

As in other high-performance long-guns offered by Steyr, the Mannlicher Pro Hunter features the Safe Bolt System (SBS), a unique 2+1 safety function that offers 3 settings operated by a wheel switch on the tang of the stock. The fire mode (safety off) is indicated by a red dot; the first level of safe mode disables the firing mechanism and the second level of safe serves to lock the bolt down against the stock and also features a press-to-release tab that locks the SBS switch in the safe position.

Another feature is the 2-stage magazine securing mechanism that uses a first stage that locks the magazine in but allows the bolt to be operated while not engaging and chambering the rounds in the magazine, thereby providing the operator with the option of loading individual rounds by hand while maintaining a full magazine at the ready. One more tap to the bottom of the magazine then seats it in the second stage, which is ready for auto-loading.

A ridiculously accurate rifle, period! Review by Paul
Years ago, my wife's aunt let her use a Steyr PH for a weekend of deer hunting and afterwards, my wife told me to see if I could find a Steyr ProHunter Mountain Rifle in 30-06 for her. Luckily, I found one within a week. A Kahles 3-12x56 was placed on it and my wife has never looked back. It can put 3 rounds in a nickel-sized group at 100yds any day of the week. The deer tremble in fear whenever my wife goes hunting! (Posted on 9/23/2018)

30-06 Best all round caliber of all time. (Until 6.5 Creedmoor) Review by Texas Cowboy
Always aspired to purchase a Pro Hunter in 30-06. This gun has been perfect from day one. Shoots 125-220gr Hornady like a champion. Get one before they are gone. (Posted on 3/10/2018)
Awesome Accuracy! Review by Rene Barga
This is my second .300 Win Mag rifle(among other rifles), got it sighted in three shots.Wow!
Next 10 shots at 100yards, all 10 shots grouped very well inside the bullseye...unbelievable. Never had a rifle that is as accurate as this one. Next time, will zero at 200 yds. (Posted on 2/21/2018)
Best all around rifle there is! Review by Knight
I have had this rifle for about 5 months topped it with a long range Leupold scope. Sighted it in at 200 yrds was able to shoot sub-moa, the rifles weight distribution is perfect, trigger is amazing . The best thing is that you get an awesome product without having to spending over thousand dollars for a rifle that doesn't even come close to what Steyr has accomplished. Steyr is #1 and has been number one for along time, and is the only rifle I'll ever need and have! (Posted on 7/19/2017)
Superior Firearm! I have sold my Remington 700, Ruger and Tikka for I need no other rifle. Review by Rocco C.
I recently harvested a 239 lb, 10 point buck in Connecticut while using my Steyr Pro Hunter .308. This is the largest deer that I have ever taken or have seen.

I have owned this rifle for sixteen years and have taken deer, javelina, feral hogs, black bear, coyotes, and an exceptional bobcat. I want to thank you for producing an accurate rifle with a crisp trigger. I feel confident every time I shoulder this weapon. I have sold my Remington 700, Ruger and Tikka for I need no other rifle.

This October I will be hunting plains game in South Africa with my Steyr. I have complete confidence that I will harvest all eighteen animals on my list. Thank you again for such a superior firearm. (Posted on 7/18/2017)
Awesome rifle Review by Long range shooter
Got this rifle in 300 win mag. Recoil is manageable, accuracy is outstanding and durability is great for hunting. Topped it with a Leupold vx-3i lrp (long range precision) 6.5-20x50mm sighted in at 100yrds can easly shoot sub-moa groups. Can't wait to try some long range shooting. (Posted on 7/4/2017)
Good rifle and very accurate Review by Gascan
Overall I love this rifle. The Shorter Barrell is good for hunting and getting in and out of stands. However I do not like the way the safety works. The locking safety on the bolt is aggravating and makes a loud click when released especially in the quiet of the woods. (Posted on 3/3/2017)

own a Pro Hunter Review by dam442
funny story, me n my nephew walk into cabelas - they had 3 steyrs in the used rack - well they're new guns they had for awhile no one knew what they were - neither did we.. did some research maybe we better buy 1, price was $659, when the register rang it up it was $559 & they took my TC on trade... So got a new steyr - TC is 308 my new steyr is 308 -- WELL, we reload - had some loads from the TC lets chamber them slow, hummm they fit, went to the range - with loads from my TC - to my surprise 4 shots all in the BULL in a line - pretty much all 4 shots touching, my TC loads are now my steyr loads - IF YOU HAVE NEVER SHOT A STEYR, PUT IT ON YOUR BUCKET LIST - IT IS A MUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( my nephew owns 1 also, 30.06 ) (Posted on 2/17/2017)
Super rifle Review by Oldelkhunter
I have a SS 270WSM and am impressed beyond comprehension. It shoots extremely consistent, takes no time to sight it in for hunting and is deadly accurate. The felt recoil of this round is like a bb gun. I have a Sako roughtech in 7mm Rem mag and it is going down the road and I will get another Steyr in 300 win mag.

MOA .5 to 1 First Time Out @ 100 yrds Review by Pop Bull
I purchased the Pro Hunter due to the fact I have always heard they are very good quality rifles. My choice was the 308Win Stainless 20" barrel. I outfitted the rifle with a Zeiss Terra RZ8/3X9X50 scope. The rifle looks awsome and in appearance with the twist on the barrrel in a stainless matte finish. At first I thought the weight may be a problem for me however after shooting it for the first time I see the weight as an advantage to less recoil. With the soooth trigger pull you get a feel of a complete uninterrupted swing in the trigger not a snap or catch feel. Love it!

On my first outing today to the Range ( The Champion Marksmanship Park, Talladegga, Alabama I was grouping shots in the Black .5-1 MOA at 100 yards. I was using Remington Core Lok 150gr Ammo.

My go to rifle prior to purchasing the Pro Hunter has been a Howa 308, Ranchland with a 20" barrel. I have to admit I love the soft synthetic stock on the Howa better than the hard synthetic stock on the Pro Hunter however overall the Steyr is hands down a better rifle. I started to give the Pro Hunter 4 Stars due to the hard stock however its overall shooting ability, made up for this weakness. Action is smooth and crisp. It only took a few minutes to become acustom to the 3-1 Safety. The 308 was my choice due to the fact I will be keeping my old rifle as a back up and my son and son-in-law have 308's so ammo is never a issue on a hunt. I have not tracked a deer over 50 yards with the combination of 308 and Remington Core Lok. Very happy with my purchase. (Posted on 10/19/2016)

bigger mag Review by clay hearne
I now own four Steyr rifles 223,260,25-06,300 win mag. They are awesome rifles.I might as well sell all of my other bolt action rifles. The only complaint I have is the 223 does not have a way to use a 10 round mag on it.All of my others have the large mag and adapter on them. Will the 223 scout mag work in my Pro Hunter? It holds at least 5 instead of 4 rounds. Great with one let down Review by Nathan
I knew when I brought my first center fire rifle many years ago I wanted something rugged and accurate. The Steyr was not high on my list til I picked it up and felt how well it fit me and how excellent the trigger was. I got a heavy stainless varmint barreled .223 rifle with which I had intended to shoot foxes; so far it has never let me down, and I can consistently get 250+ yard first round knock downs if I do my part. The only gripe I have with the rifle is why Steyr chose to use a 4 round magazine when a 5 shot was already developed for the Scout. Also the lack of a .222/.223/.22-250 10 shot adapter kit is baffling. These are the calibers that need more shots on tap for fast and furious varminting. Anyhow I do not regret the purchase, and maybe one day some aftermarket company will make a 5 or 10 shot adapter for the smaller caliber rifles. (Posted on 8/7/2016)

Fabulous Rifle, Mediocre Stock. Review by Accidic
You would be hard pressed to find a single knock against the rifle action itself. Perhaps the plastic on the safety if you reached but it has the best safety of any modern I've fired so that's an empty knock. In 6.5x55SE it will hold under 1 MOA with nearly any ammo that I've thrown at it. Often under 0.5 MOA in a stock rifle. The trigger is fantastic. Production rifles are never going to be "Custom" level rifles but this one comes close enough you can touch the outskirts of it.

That said, the downside is the stock. It is *ok* and far better than the first stock I saw the Steyr PH in years ago that was super flexy but it's still more flexible than I'd like by a large margin. Steyr had a wooden stock (Forester) but they liquidated and discontinued them which is disappointing. The composite magazine is fine but plastic trigger guards leave quite a bit to be desired. The perk with adjustable LoP is nice but doesn't make up for the plastic and since no other options are really offered short of going with the $2500-$3000 SM12, you're stuck with the less than stellar stock offering.

Unrelated to Steyr but pertinent to the rifle's one weakness: If you go the Short Action route there is McMillan. Personally preferring wood I'd rather go with Boyds but they are no longer offered unfortunately. I've yet to find another option short of going to a gunsmith specializing in stocks. As well as this rifle performs it's a crying shame. (Posted on 5/18/2016)
THE most accurate production rifle made Review by Billy Ray
I've owned a Steyr Pro Hunter chambered in .300 WSM for about 13 years now. Got this particular chambering purely by mistake, but it has been an incredibly accurate rifle since day one. Would recommend this model rifle to anyone. (Posted on 5/6/2016)
Superior Rifle Review by Omega6464
Purchased this rifle for whitetail and axis deer in 7mm-08. I have been impressed with every facet of the weapon. Trigger, barrel, stock, magazine, safety and even the Talley mounts have exceeded my expectations, despite reading countless reviews prior to purchasing. I simply could not be more pleased. Now my son is looking for a Pro Hunter for himself and I am considering a stainless Pro Hunter to replace my current elk gun. (Posted on 4/17/2016)

The heavyweight long-gun of my armory- The .376 STEYR. Review by Mayor AL (Retired)
I have a Steyer ProHUnter in .376 Steyr Caliber. It has the Extended Magazinr option, giving the rifle a 10 round total capacity. The stock is made of dark green composite material with Stainless steel, futed Barrel and Action. I use the Steyr for larger game and the longer ranges I find when hunting 'Out West". I do an annual Bison Hunt using the .376 and it has yet to let me down. I use the Hornady 325 gr SP ammo and have done 4 animals over 1200 lbs each in the 300-350 yard range with one shot "clean-kills" on all of them (2011-2014) i am looking for a Thumbhole-Laminated stock like'BOYD'S" to dress the gun to match my Rugar and Springfield Armory rifles. This is a fine accurate rifle and I am pleased to be able to use it. (Posted on 3/12/2016)
Excellent quality, well balanced and accurate Review by hihasan
I have been hunting with my Pro-Hunter for four years in 308 WIN mounted with Vortex HS LR 4-16X50 . I have taken several animals including Elk, Deer and Antelope from 80 yards to 465 yards measured with Leica range finder. I can hit 8 inch plate from 600 yards with no problem. I have owned several rifles and to this date pro-hunter is the best that money can buy. It has superb quality, very well balanced, you don't feel the weight of rifle to be 8 poundish when you shoulder it, I think that is because of the balance of the rifle.

Two concerns I have with the rifle is, it does not have user adjustable trigger and the bolt is not smooth as some other rifles in the market has. (Posted on 3/9/2016)
Great firearms, super accurate Review by Dons Gun's / KENNAMER FIREARMS----SCOTTSBORO, AL.
I've taken 7 Elk, I shot nothing smaller than 5x5; A large number of Alabama Deer and had the opportunity to take a few,Texas Deer. Most of all having the opportunity to take those KANSAS & OHIO "MONSTER" Deer with my Steyr Pro Hunter in 7mm-08 Caliber was the most enjoyable of all. After 3 Back Surgery's and a knee replacement, I know longer hunt wild game; but I do shoot Benchrest Competition now at "300 & 600 yards" my stock Steyr Pro Hunter in 7mm-08 caliber shoot factory ammo will embarrass these guys with their high dollar custom rifles shooting .308 Caliber an hand loaded ammo.

STEYR --- GREAT Weapons- the Cold Hammer Forged Barrel is extremely Accurate Period- Shot placement is the key to Game shooting. (Posted on 1/29/2016)

love this gun Review by ted
I got this steyr in a 300 win mag and glad i did WOW you talking about cutting bullet hole's this gun will do it. i shoot a 165 gr ballistic tip hunting bullet with 80 gr of H1000 . it shot so good i moved out to 600 yards and it is a long range gun for sure bust gallon jugs like nothing. now i am moving out to 1000 yards with it. i cant wate to see what it does, i sure to say i can bust gallon jugs like nothing. the MOA is to small for it not to do the job. my friends won't one now after seeing this steyr shoot. thanks ya'll . keep shooting out there. Outstanding Rifle as expected. Review by Cutterjohn
These rifle may look cheap with the synthetic stock but I have used my 7-08 in all weather conditions and environment and it just keeps shooting. No jams, no hickups, no surprises. Point of impact never changes despite heat ,cold, and bumps and the occasional slip and fall on rocks, hills, and creeks. Safety is easy to use and quick to release at the moment of truth. Magazine feeds flawlessly, the action is smooth and solid, and rifle carries, points, and shoots like the 4k rifles I love but am too scared to abuse on a hunt. I love this rifle, regardless of the condition of the hunt, it does what's supposed to every time with class and confidence. What more can you ask of any rifle. (Posted on 12/8/2015)
30-06 Review by Dave
Excellent rifle. Stock is less than optimal. To bad no good aftermarket stuff is out there. (Posted on 12/4/2015)
Excellent rifle, in an all weather pkg Review by Big Ed
Purchased as an all weather rifle (30 06). Very accurate rifle with an excellent trigger. Action is smooth for a production rifle. Stock looks different but fits me well. The indents in the stock grips area provide room for my palm. I have large hands and this works very well. Some have said older rifles had too much flex in the forearm, not on mine (purchased in 2015). Some nice features especially the safety and bolt positioning. The bolt handle near the bolt may rise too high when open for medium height scope rings, you may need high for a 3-9X40. In other words the objective size may not be the limiting factor for ring height. Please note: the bolt handle is different vs many of the common rifles in the US. Overall I am very pleased.
