The Steyr Scout provides the ideal solution for versatility, durability, accuracy and reliability in a compact and lightweight bolt-action rifle platform. Developed in a nearly decade-long collaboration with legendary Marine Corps Lt.Col. Jeff Cooper, the Scout boasts an extensive list of innovative features.

The lightweight bolt-action, all-purpose Steyr Scout rifle was designed to accept a low-powered, forward-mounted scope for accurate fire and both-eyes-open operation to detect flanking dangers. Backup “ghost-ring” iron sights integrated to the top rail can be deployed within seconds should the optics fail. The rifle can also be fitted with a standard scope, should the need arise.

In keeping with Cooper’s requirement for a magazine cutoff, Steyr incorporated a two-position magazine system that allowed the rifle to be fed individually with the five-round magazine in a lowered position. The magazine could be seated one step further with minimal pressure, allowing the bolt to feed cartridges directly from the magazine. A second five-round backup magazine is contained in the buttstock in case of an urgent need to reload.

With a fluted, cold-hammer-forged barrel measuring 19 inches, an overall length of 38.6 inches and an out-of-the-box weight of just 6.6 pounds, the Scout is a breeze to pack out on long adventures, patrolling the farm or taking a quick trip to the range. The compact design of the stock features an innovative integrated bipod that is hardly noticeable until it is folded out from the stock. Between the bipod legs is a UIT rail for attachments, and the stock is outfitted with five press-and-twist sling-swivel attachment points that allow the addition of Cooper’s favored Ching Sling on either side of the rifle.

The Steyr Scout is built on the Safe Bolt System (SBS) action with a unique 2+1 safety function that offers three settings operated by a wheel switch on the tang of the stock. The FIRE mode (safety off) is indicated by a red dot, and the first level of SAFE mode disables the firing mechanism while allowing the bolt to be cycled. The second SAFE position locks the bolt, at which point the bolt can be pushed down against the stock, locking the firing pin and firing mechanism out of firing position, allowing safe transportation with a round in the chamber. Simply pressing the safety’s release tab and rolling it forward returns the bolt to either the SAFE or the FIRE position.

The Steyr Scout is available in a choice of Black, Grey, Mud and Green, and it is available chambered in .223 Remington, .243 Winchester, 7mm-08 Remington and .308 Winchester calibers. Two 5-round magazines are included. A high-capacity conversion kit and hi-capacity magazines are also available to increase carry capacity to 20 rounds.

The unique features make the Scout a self-contained platform that can easily be carried in a rifle scabbard without any need for attaching/detaching a bipod or finding extra pockets for a spare magazine, perfect for use on horseback, ATV or on a vehicle rifle rack.

Love this rifle Review by 32ndgeorgia
Quality
I have owned this rifle for many years. It has a Hensoldt military surplus scope. I have used the rifle out to 700 yds. (that is my limit with the scope) Took a sniper course and all participants were amazed at the performance of the rifle/scope. Bipod and Ching sling really aid accuracy.
Best load: 42.2 g. Reloader15 - 168 g. SMK. If you really have to shoot something using one shot, this is the rifle to use. (Posted on 2/10/2017)
An amazing piece of work! Review by Drew

I recently purchased a Steyr Scout Rifle Jeff Cooper edition made 1998. It had remained in the case, unfired until I took it to the range the day after I bought it. A was amazed at the performance then and remain so. At each range outing the Scout digests ammo of various makes and bullet weights equal ease. It is truly the one rifle a person could own without feeling any additional need. (Posted on 1/30/2017)
Best rifle I have even owned! Review by SamM
Quality
Honestly, this rifle is awesome! It's lightweight, accurate and very ergonomic. Everyone that has seen my .308W Steyr Scout questions me at length about it. They can't believe it's as light as it is and has the features that it does. Mr. Cooper knew what he was doing when he conceptualized this rifle. My time at the range is spent mostly talking about Steyr rifles. The Scout is paired with a Steyr AUG to complete my do-everything 2-gun combo. I realized last year, that I just had gun after gun sitting in my safe collecting dust. All of my ARs, AKs, bolt guns and high dollar optics were sold off and I moved completely to the Steyr brand of rifles. I had owned a few in the past and they served me well. The AUG is the perfect 5.56 companion rifle to the 7.62 Scout. These both cover all my needs 100%.

This past hunting season, I took a nice 8-point buck with the Scout. It has become a general purpose/ranch rifle for me on my 100 acre property. I do not use it with a Scout scope. I mounted a conventional Leupold 3-9X Patrol rifle scope. It will get a thermal imager for predator hunting soon. Having fewer higher quality weapons means that I can purchase better optics.

Thank you, Steyr! This is the best hunting/tactical bolt action rifle on the market.

Fantastic rifle! Review by Jluck

Absolutely fantastic rifle! I've played with many and owned dozens. I have been hunting with a ProHunter for years (Harvested over 40 large game animals with it) and just recently got a scout. I'll probably use it the rest of my life. Only problem is now wife wants a scout over her ProHunter... (Posted on 11/17/2016)

Completely agree with all U guys saying ab SS /mine in .308/
But have U ever try to use flip sights SUCCESSFULLY.....
I try...very hard. I pack on ALL of butt spacers from my old and absolutely LOVELY Pro Hunter in 6.5 SW what I have for almost 20 years....I try to break my 71years neck.....NOPE. NOT WORKING.
IF ANYONE WILL HELP ME TO UNDERSTAND WHAT I DOING WRONG I WILL BE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.
THANKS AND GOODLUCK ON YOUR TRAILS

Phenomenal Rifle Review by JCoops

A few years ago I showed up at a shoot-fest being conducted by my nephew and his friends. They had set up soda cans from 100 yards to 350 yards. No one was having any success. My brother's Steyr Scout was leaning against the wall. I took the Steyr used the Ching sling and popped up a can off-hand at 350 yards. Needless to say I did not take another shot. But I got a Steyr Scout.
Col. Jeff Cooper was my uncle, and I used his Scout II to take the rifle course. It was nice rifle, in the days when the concept was being developed. But I now have one rifle, the beautifully built, phenomenally accurate Steyr Scout! (Posted on 6/24/2016)

I've owned my SS for 10+ years and still am amazed by the fantastic design, quality workmanship and materials, effectiveness and reliability. I hunt with the rifle and it has never failed. The saying is correct...if you only had one rifle..it should be a Steyr Scout in .308. (Posted on 3/4/2016)
