Awesome gun! Review by Tim
Quality
Love the feel of this gun! I installed talon grips. This is the best feeling handgun I own! I wish there was a night sight version of sights! I am a left handed shooter and wish the mag release was ambidextrous!! (Posted on 3/6/2017)
The Best Pistol Nobody Knows About Review by max2330
Quality
I saw one of these pistols in a LGS a few years ago. It has always intrigued me, but I just never picked one up. I finally got around to getting one and I am very impressed. I wish I had got one years ago. The quality is better than I expected. This is a very well built pistol and the PLUS mags it came with are very good quality as well. The grip angle is a little strange and the sights take some getting used to, but the pistol shoots great and the accuracy is very good. Shoot it best rapid fire...for some reason. I think if Steyr would advertise this " Off The Radar" pistol more heavily, it would be a great seller and a great success. If you are considering getting one...GET ONE!!

Updated review**** Review by Alejandro

So I just wanted to update in my initial review. I have this pistol for almost two years now, Columbia consistently use it as my daily off duty carry and have put through approximately 5000 rounds. The pros: no malfunctions so far, which I think is impressive (I only use factory ammo, no reloads). The sights are easy to obtain when shooting and it's a very accurate gun, the ergonomics still magnificent, the only thing I added was talon grips because I personally like a more "rough" texture. The only cons I can add to this review are the non existing night sights for the trapezoidal factory ones, I think adding a night version of those will be outstanding, also interchangeable grip options will be useful. Another con is the difficulty to find a variety of accessories like holsters and such... overall this is a great firearm! (Posted on 3/3/2017)
M40-A1 Great Firearm Review by kenpoman

After a motorcycle accident (not my fault) I thought I would never be able to own a 40 S&W because of the recoil. Well the M40-A1 proved me wrong. My local gun store recommended it and they were right. I have shot about 100 rounds and it's the best feeling 40 I have ever handled (before the accident I owned several 40's, Glock 22, Glock 23, S&W 99, Glock 27, etc.). The triangular sites are unique and easy for my older eyes to pick up. If I were going to own just one semi-auto, this would be it. (Posted on 2/5/2017)
M9 is Amazing! Review by Brian
Quality
I've been a Colt 1911 fan for decades. That being said, there is something really special about the Steyr M9 pistol. I own three M9s and the fit, finish and function are superb. While the M9 looks a little peculiar when sitting on the shelf waiting to be purchased, the pistol looks and feels great in the hand. It's an amazingly accurate pistol as well. And, you just can't beat the confidence that 17+1, 9mm rounds gives a person. I own Colts, Glocks, Kimber, and Smith & Wessons. The Steyr M9 has the unique, cool factor at a very reasonable price. One suggestion: Steyr needs to sell threaded barrels with the thread protecting caps. (Posted on 1/28/2017)
My wishes for A2 Review by BlackSheepSquad
Quality
I like my M40-A1. Very accurate, POA=POI. Looks odd but has great ergo, sights and trigger and it is easy to take-down.

My wishes for A2

1.more agressive grip texture
2.more positive trigger reset
3.larger mag release (Posted on 1/25/2017)
8 month follow up review. Review by D.B. Cooper
Quality
I guessed right (see my 1st review). This gun is stone reliable. Extremely happy with it. Shoots very tight groups. If I was forced to pick ONE semi-auto and live with it, I would have to give this gun very serious consideration. The sights grow on you....they do stand out and make target acquisition easy. Only "complaint" is that it is just a little large for IWB holster carry which I like....but it is not a mouse gun. You can't have everything. Very likeable and reliable gun. (Posted on 12/19/2016)
Consider this... Review by Big Chief

I had been stationed in S. Korea, where you can't really have guns, and I had been considering which pistol I wanted to purchase upon my return. As a military guy, I was looking at something that would fit the bill for a personal defense weapon but was also very versatile. I also wanted something that felt like an extension of myself. I had never shot a Glock and had an opportunity to shoot a G19 and I liked the balance and feel of it. I was also heavily considering the Sig P320. I didn't even know that Steyr made a pistol until my return, when I just happened across the S40. It felt good in my had but was a little small and although I wasn't necessarily a fan of .40, I figured it had to come in 9mm. I inquired around some local ranges to see if they had one I could shoot and I found one that happened to have the L9-A1. It felt AWESOME but slightly big for a CCW (at least in my hands). I was also really intrigued by the integrated lock and the trapezoidal sights. I spent the next two weeks looking at a lot of reviews and was bummed out to hear that there had been, historically speaking, a few FTF/FTE issues. However, the problem has been apparently fixed with the most recent model so I finally committed to the M9-A1. Considering the price tag was $530 (what I paid), that was a justifiable steal. I literally fired it straight out of the case and my recommendation is, the M9 comes with the same 17 round mags as the L9 and is much more concealable. Pull the trigger... figuratively. I don't think you will regret it. (Posted on 12/17/2016)

The things that I said about the inconsistent trigger.... never mind. I called Steyr, Jeff, and he went out of his way to resolve my trigger issues. The trigger is now the same, shot after shot. Great gun and even better service. (Posted on 8/3/2016)
FTF and FTE with Steyr pistols Review by Victor
Quality
I own 2 Steyr pistols: 9mm and 40SW. 9mm works perfectly. 40SW was finicky from day 1: FTF/FTE sporadically. I contacted Steyr support and they were not helpful: suggested I use ammo with hard primers. That was annoying, cause I have Glocks, IWI, etc. in 40SW and same ammo worked just fine. Until I found on web one comment, that suggested: problem with 40SW Steyrs not a pistol itself but ... MAGAZINES. Here it is:

"... upon further inspection i narrowed it down to the magazine rather than ammo. The front lip face on the magazine seems to be just an mm too high and the flat face doesn’t help either. I noticed that round #5 would favor a downward movement where the casing face would collide with the mentioned front lip face of the magazine, also in regards to “hard primers” i can say that my 2015+ era S&B ammo have hilariously soft primers considering the fired primer resembles that of a scoop taken out of a tub of ice-cream..."

I filed that 1mm of metal front of all my 6 40SW magazines and I am sure now it fixed the problem. (Posted on 7/26/2016)
Ultimate in Dependability Review by JV
Quality
I carried the M40 for 10 years as my duty weapon. It never failed to function as designed. The grips are comfortable, and the sights provide easy target acquisition. I highly recommend this handgun for its dependability. (Posted on 7/20/2016)
Wonderful Pistol Review by Jeff

My M9-A1 has become my go-to pistol and the one I take most to the range. Through approximately 1,000 rounds I have not had any issues with FTEs, etc. The grip fits my hands better than most other polymer framed pistols I have worked with. Great product and I look forward to picking up the compact version in the future. (Posted on 7/13/2016)

Great gun buuuut Review by NJCOP
Quality
I like the ergonomics and it shoots fairly well BUT the trigger drives me crazy. Sometimes there is creep. Sometimes there isn't creep. Sometimes the trigger pull is 8lbs and sometimes it is 6lbs. Sometimes it is gritty and sometimes it isn't and sometimes its perfect .... then not. It's all over the place sort of like a 5 year old in a candy store. I don't have the latest model but I've shot the latest model also and it's the same ball of wax. It's built like a tank and it handles recoil better than any other pistol out there. Now, if they address the inconsistent trigger this gun would be a solid 10. (Posted on 6/2/2016)
Comfortable and simple Review by Casley
Quality
I love this gun it is one of the most comfortable handguns I have used! The breakdown for field cleaning is simple (one button and a lever). It is accurate the sights are unlike any other. For how light it is the recoil is almost nothing! My only gripe and reason it didn't receive five stars is the extractor at least on older models doesn't work very well. I am awaiting a reply from customer service about that and once I do I will leave a report.

In all its inexpensive comfortable and accurate with little recoil I just wish it was made in .45ACP!!!

I was a Sig guy my whole life. Until I started to work at a gun range and two out three people carried it. I was very hesitant to even try it. I went out and shot one of theirs and I fell in LOVE. Next paycheck I had my own. I am pretty sure that I will never carry anything else. Besides maybe a different size Steyr. (Posted on 3/11/2016)
Best ergonomics and trigger Review by Jan

I own both S9 and M9 models. The most ergonomic handguns I've ever held. Great trigger and very short reset. For concealed carry I'd recommend the M model or C model because both are just a tad longer longer than the S model but hold much more securely. (Posted on 3/10/2016)
Very pleased with new M40-A1 (40 S&W) Review by D.B.Cooper
Quality
I now have about 400 rounds through my M40-A1. Zero malfunctions of any kind, regardless of bullet type, weight, or type of ammo. My gut feeling is that the gun is going to be super reliable. Ergnomics are good. Small hands may have a problem with grip size. Nit-pick: trigger safety button irritated my finger a little after a lot of rounds in one session. After I got use to the sights, I liked them. This gun shoots directly to point of aim and groups ("benchrest") are very tight. No sight adjustment was required; I was impressed. Possibly the best out-of-the-box polymer semi-auto I have run in to. Recoil feels marginally less than some other 40's. The gun is very underrated. I am glad I bought it. (No, I don't work for Steyr....) (Posted on 3/5/2016)
Excellent from sight to grip Review by JordanW

I have fired roughly 700 rounds through mine over the course of about a year. The trapazoid sights make for excellent aiming and the deep grip making handling a dream. The only downside is that rounds are ejected straight back onto my head. Other than that it is the best pistol I have ever shot. (Posted on 3/1/2016)

I bought this handgun for my wife because it was a 9mm, but after shooting it several times i sold my springfield xd and bought the M9-A1, i have been carrying it for most of a year, practice at least once a week and have over 1000 rounds without a problem, its accurate, lighter than my xd and has a natural point i have found on no other pistol (Posted on 2/26/2016)

This gun is my first and, needless to say, I am in love. I went to the gun range and on my first shot, I hit right in the center of the target. If I had to say anything bad about this gun is just the lack of options. But if you can get pass that you will be like me and be a guy in love with a Steyr. (Posted on 2/21/2016)
Amazing Pistols... Review by R. Reed
Quality
I compete with Steyr pistols, I have multiple Steyrs in different calibers and frame sizes, and they are truly amazing. The low bore axis and large beaver tail equal an unparalleled reduction in felt recoil and muzzle rise. The triggers are short, light and smooth; by far the best factory triggers I have ever encountered. I am proud to represent such a wonderful product! (Posted on 2/17/2016)
An amazing pistol Review by alpha

I'm an avid fan of firearms and have fired a fair share of pistols but none have felt better in my hand than the Steyr. It's layout is similar to other pistols so it took little to no time to get acquainted with the functions. Where it really shined to me was on the range. My eyes locked on to the trapezoidal sights quickly and I noticed my accuracy was a little better than normal. Definitely happy with the purchase. (Posted on 2/14/2016)

Nearly Great Review by Brian

I love Steyr pistols. My recent purchase of an M357-A1 has a failure to extract rate of 12 to 15 percent. This translates in real life to one to three major malfunctions per magazine. these failure to extract (FTE) require remedial action whilst on the firing line. Unsat. Still love Steyr, just need this fixed. (Posted on 2/9/2016)

After owning an assortment of hanguns including glocks, 1911s and many other service pistols, I have been blown away with the ergonomics and shoot ability of the Steyr a1 pistols! Now my #1 handgun for any occasion. Well done Steyr! (Posted on 1/26/2016)
Fits like a glove Review by Alexander The Great
Quality
Couldn't have asked for a better, more reliable firearm at this price. I've shot my fair share of 9mm handguns and this is by far my favorite.

It fits in my hand well and their is a noticeable difference of reduced recoil. In the last 2 years of owning the M-A1 model I have yet to have a misfire of any sort... Highly recommended.

Only con thus far is its hard to find accessories or mags at sporting/firearm retailers. That being said, you can pretty much buy what you need here on this site including 17+1 extended mags! (Posted on 1/22/2016)
GLOCKBLOCKER Review by remymartin
Quality
I have owned just about everything for 20 years. Settled on Glock because it just works. These things are like buried treasure. Better trigger, better ergos, better sights.....Glock advantage is having aftermarket support and a more positive trigger reset (but longer). Steyr wins for producing a better pistol at a great price point that doesn't need aftermarket parts to function well. (Posted on 1/12/2016)
Excellent pistol Review by Digger
Quality
Sights are easy to acquire and shoot at speed. The gun is inherently accurate if the sights are utilized as designed. I use the Steyr for Steel Challenge due to its low recoil, fast target acquisition and excellent out of the box trigger. I may change out the sights in the future only because I am more used to the three dot system. The build quality is simply the best I've seen in a polymer hanging. Fit and finish is very good. The gun is a little too thick in slide for inside the waistband carry, and finding holsters can be challenging. That said, I replaced my Glock 23 with the M40A1 and am very pleased. Hello own M40A1 and M9-A1 and I must say that the gun is very good. Unfortunately the accessories from the manufacturer no. Not Holster quality, no other accessories. I would be glad if you have a gun sold more supplements, it is not possible competition with the Glock. Gloc And I do not want to have to buy. The second problem pistol It takes only quality ammunition. when using cheaper, so the ejection of the cartridge does not. I would be glad if you contacted me and offered me to sell more accessories. Best Gun in regular size Review by Bravio

my M9-A1 Fits the hand extremely well. The triangle sights are easy to align and when put on the target, you hit what you sight on. The action is smooth. It is easy to take down. I think that it is one of my best if not the absolute best gun I have. Now I am looking at the smaller 9mm. Steyr makes some great guns. (Posted on 11/25/2015)
Great firearm Review by Tony

I have owned my M40-A1 pistol for around 6years. This is a well built handgun with a great feel in my hands. I have big gorilla hands by the way. Easy takedown, love the built in trigger lock, and love the trapezoid sites, takes getting used to but hard not to love them once you get aquanted with them. This gun has never Jamed on me once that I can remember no matter what ammo I put threw it. All around great firearm.... Wonder if I get a t-shirt from steyr for being the first review;) keep up the good work steyr. (Posted on 11/25/2015)
After more than 5,000 rounds... Review by The BBQ DR.
Quality
...After more than 5,000 rounds of every round imaginable, I think this pistol just gets better and better. I've run 4,500 rounds of FMJ over two years now and had only two FTE events: both of which happened to a new shooter which I blame on the limp wristing, because once they corrected their grip it didn't happen again. Brass, aluminum, or steel cased doesn't matter this gun eats it all. Wish I could say the same for my Glock!
The real treat however are the sights. The pyramid sights are easy to find in a hurry, and make getting back on target very quickly a breeze. The economics and grip angle feel natural and lend to very tight groupings at even 25 yards. So far the fit and finish are holding up very nicely and the action just keeps getting better. If you looked the gun over you'd swear it had less than 100 rounds thru it, it's just that durable.
I've had Glock fanboys shoot it at the range and immediately offer to buy it. It's just that much better to shoot than the Glock 17 or 19. My wife, daughter and daughter-in-law love it compared to everything else I own. So it remains at home for their defense while my EDC is something else.
All-in-all, don't consider buying one, just buy it, you'll never regret it. (Posted on 11/25/2015)
