The Steyr L-A1 striker-fired pistol is a full-sized, semi-automatic, double-action handgun chambered in a choice of 9x19mm Parabellum with a magazine capacity of 17 rounds, or .40 Smith & Wesson with a magazine capacity of 12 rounds, designated as the L9-A1 and L40-A1.

With a barrel length of 4.5” (114mm), the L-A1 is the largest of the Steyr pistol line and offers maximum accuracy for ideal application in duty use, home defense and sport or competitive shooting. A full-length integrated Picatinny rail allows for mounting of nearly any standard light and/or laser and two recoil groves in the rail provides adjustment for whatever accessory is installed on the firearm. The slide of the Steyr L-A1 also features slide-racking grooves at both the rear and front of the slide.

As with each model in the Steyr A1 line of products, the pistol features a low bore-axis which minimizes recoil and improves control. The lower frame of the gun offers a standard slide-lock thumb tab, right-handed magazine ejection button and pivoting break-down lever. A key-operated manual safety feature is located next to the break-down lever and 2 keys are provided with each pistol.

**Please note that the 9mm barrel is threaded right-handed with 1/2 x 28 thread pitch.**

L9A1 Review by FMC777
Quality
I saw an L40A1 at a store and loved it but did not want to add a caliber. Ordered my L9A1 from Buds.
I have over 200 rounds through it with no malfunctions
The slide stop was a litle stiff but fixed it with copper never seize.
Ergonomics I rate a 10
I am a righty and do not want weak hand levers
The takedown is on the right, so if you strong side carry its in the right place.
The unwanted internal lock is at least useful for locking the takedown, very nice design.
The slide stop is excellently placed and shaped with little to no sharp edges
The mag button is the best in the business. It is extended in length rather than depth so its just perfect for your thumb.
The Trigger feels comfy with no slap, and the pull is incredible. about like a 3.5 polished Glock.
The grip angle is perfect but has a lot of smooth plastic
I covered that with the Talon grip now its great.
The Sights I initially liked but now have trouble punching paper with them. Target sights would be nice to make available.
The workmanship and finish, markings are a 10
Recoil is incredibly comfortable, I really do not remember it after an hour of shooting.
The gun is big, just slightly under a Glock 21 but would be fine for duty or home defense uses or just fun shooting.

-1 star overall due to the massive slide, smooth parts of grip and the sights.

Without doubt the most enjoyable 40 SW to shoot, ever! Review by skyrazer77
Quality
Just had the Steyr L40-A1 unboxed, cleaned, and out to the range. The Steyr L40-A1 fed flawlessly all types of FMJ, HP, XTP, and SCHP I threw at it. Wow, this design takes all the snap out of the 40SW cartridge and makes it feel like you are shooting a 9mm or 38 -- unbelievably superior to the Glock, M&P, and XD in 40!

Mags are very well made, some of the most beautiful I have seen. Was able to pick a bunch up on sale, too. These remind me of classic Mec-Gar used by Sig and Beretta at different times. No failures to feed, load or eject in the first 1K rounds sent down range and still I'm still waiting. The reliability of the Steyr action is is first rate. Not a huge fan of the sights at first, but re-acquisition of the front triangle is very easy -- I like that -- but sometimes I have trouble identifying the proper rear sight picture. I suspect it will continue to get better with practice, though.

Over-all, this pistol gets 5 stars, plus. It is simply the most reliable, ergonomic and enjoyable to shoot 40 SW pistol ever made! (Posted on 9/16/2016)
L40-A1 Review by Old Miserian

I have always liked how Steyr pistols felt in the hand but didn't buy one until this year. I like everything about this pistol and most especially how the 40 "snap" is nearly eliminated. This was a dislike I developed after firing some S&W 4046's back in the day. I could shoot them accurately but never grew to enjoy shooting them. I am leaving this Steyr stock as it is very close to a perfect pistol for me. It's just a tremendous amount of fun to shoot. Purchased from Prepper Gun Shop A++. (Posted on 7/25/2016)

Smooth action, nice gun Review by AIK
Quality
Well, I have a fine gun in this Steyr L9-A1. I love its ergonomics, its natural pointing.
I did a bit of beyond Steyr recommended tuning but I am a competent ex armorer. I polished every working surface to a mirror sheen and tuned my springs a bit. The result is an absolutely grit free smooth and safe action, ready for IPSC competition.
I would not encourage anyone going beyond field stripping and cleaning unless one is a competent gunsmith. However, in my case I have a light and crisp action shy of 4 punds. With a couple of thousand rounds through the action will further settle in and I expect to achieve a 3 lb. trigger as an end result. This gun will take the place of my S&W M&P Pro 9 for IPSC Production Division. (Posted on 6/30/2016)
Good ergonomics - action needs smoothening Review by Antal
Quality
Disclaimer, I am a fan of the Steyr brand. That said, if one is serious about competition shooting with the L9-A1 then a good polishing job and some adjustments in spring tensions need to be done expertly. I am a competent person when it comes to tuning firearms. My L9-A1 is night and day different after I worked the action over. Touching surfaces needed de-burring and polishing to a mirror sheen to take the grit out of the action. Spring geometries were slightly altered to maintain 100% reliability while lightening trigger pull to a shy 4 pounds. The gun is competition worthy now. I am awaiting on my holster and extra mags to arrive, till then it is range testing time. So far about 1000 rounds have been fired without a single malfunction and greatly improved accuracy with the lighter action. (Posted on 6/27/2016)
Steyr L9-M1 Review by Gregg1LE

Finest striker fired 9mm I have had the pleasure to shoot. Great trigger, fantastic sights (once you get used to them), and superior ergonomics to any 9mm full sized on the market. My only concern is to parts availability in the future. Great job , Steyr ! (Posted on 5/10/2016)
Awesome Pistol Review by Chris
Quality
Lots of great features.. low bore axis - giving you minimal felt recoil, even with high-power 40 cal loads. Natural pointing with an ergonomic grip and controls. Awesome trigger... almost no perceptible creep and a short reset . Innovate sights - but I did switch to tritium. Dead simple take-down for fast, easy cleaning and maintenance.... All with duty-grade reliability and solid accuracy... before you buy your next pistol, you really need to put a Steyr in hand... you won't want to put it down. (Posted on 3/4/2016)
NOW i like polymer pistols Review by glock what???
Quality
hands down the nicest polymer gun IMO. We will see more from Steyer now that they are located in the states. Once more people get them in there hands, and the company has a few more trick parts, and more holsters are readily available, gun shops will be carrying them like that other gun. Great pistol Review by JJW

Bought this after comparing it to a Glock. The grip, sights and balance of the gun are perfect. Recoil is minimum. Better than any other 9 I've ever owned. (Posted on 2/1/2016)
Fantastic all round Review by Gunsmith-sama
Quality
I absolutely love my L.40! The way it sits in the hand is almost as if it were custom made just for my hand, it is fantastic. The low bore feel is great, and keeps groups very well. Have had absolutely zero problems with it, even with the plastic guide rod which seems a little cheapish to me, but with no problems I guess it ain't so bad. Overall, I would definitely pick this up over a Glock or a XD in a life or death situation. Hands down best in its class range in my opinion. (Posted on 12/24/2015)
Excellent ;pistol Review by roadtoad
Quality
I am a professional who chose the 9mm over the .40 for both magazine capacity and ease of replenishment anywhere in the world. I am most impressed with its accuracy and ability to function with a wide variety of loads in extreme conditions that caused malfunctions in the high-dollar pistol it has replaced. As I extend the forefinger of my supporting hand to the front of the trigger guard to dampen recoil, my only wish is for a slight extension of the guard at the bottom to aid this; but I will happily live without it as a bit of work with a file will fix it.

My L9-A1 Review by Gregg

Bought my pistol from Buds Gunshop and could not be happier. 300+ rounds thru it and not one problem. May look into a S9-A1. (Posted on 11/25/2015)
